The Coyotes will not be chasing free-agent defensemen, leaving Michal Rozsival and Adrian Aucoin to test the market. The team’s surplus of young defensemen could act as a strong bargaining chip once some of the top names are scooped up.
“I do believe our acquisitions are going to be done more by trade than the free-agent market,” Maloney said.
The Coyotes have not yet made a decision on center Daymond Langkow and left-winger Taylor Pyatt. Both players have expressed an interest to return, Maloney said, but the Coyotes feel handcuffed until they know the destinations of Doan and Whitney.
“If we lose them, then we’ll have to find a way to replace them,” he said.
