Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Ziggy Palffy has announced his retirement, effective immediately, due to personal reasons.update 12:39pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
About the only upside to Palffy's retirement decision is that it will give the Penguins some salary-cap relief. Last summer, he signed a three-year, $13.5 million contract with the team after spending the previous five seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. They will almost certainly apply for an injury-exemption, which would free up some salary-cap space for the team. Chances are, with the Penguins sinking fast, they may not even bother using the room.more update 3:15pm, more from the Pittsburgh Penguins,
“Everyone was surprised,” Penguins General Manager Craig Patrick said. “[Tuesday] was a day off [for the team]. Ziggy came into my office around 9:30 [a.m.] and wanted to talk to me. We talked about a lot of things. At the end he said he wanted to retire for personal reasons. After our discussion, I understand all his issues and I respect his decision. He’s ready to move on from hockey.”update 4:18pm, Jess at Hockey Rants takes a look back at Ziggy's career.
