But this game, this night, was as much an event in this city as it was a critical professional sports contest, although Carlyle might quibble on that point.

In many burgs, fans would have long ago abandoned the locals after so long a playoff purgatory. Not here, not where the Leafs have been as well supported as any pro franchise in the world, all logic and common sense aside.

For Game 3, the populace surely contributed as much as it could, responding to the first sighting of spring hockey in years. But all the noise and beer-swilling and Leaf jersey-wearing in the world, and yes, all the hoping and imagining and yearning, turned out to be not quite enough on this night.

No surprise, really. Hostile Canadian environments seem to bring out the best in the Bruins.
