Islanders Trade Wisniewski To Montreal

via the New York Islanders,

The New York Islanders have acquired from the Montreal Canadiens their compensatory second-round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft as well as a conditional fifth-round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for defenseman James Wisniewski.

The Canadiens acquired the compensatory pick after not signing their former first round pick, David Fisher.

The Canton, Michigan native joined the Islanders on July 30 through a trade from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a conditional third round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Wisniewski played in 32 of the Islanders 34 games this season, recording 21 points (three goals and 18 assists).

Wisniewski’s a piece of crap who will fit in well in Montreal. Just put his stall next to Lapierre’s.

That said, 5th round pick from a playoff team? Garth Snow can’t get a better return than that for a physical, right-handed defenseman?

Nevermind. 2nd and a 5th. That’s a little better.

what a steal for the canadiens.  Wishnewski is worth a lot more than a 2nd rd pick

I wonder if the league is going to punish the Islanders for being under the cap floor provided that their players don’t hit the bonuses which currently have them floating above it.

The Islanders might take back someone as a salary dump along with a pick, say a player + 3rd rounder for future considerations. They might even take someone, whose cap hit is higher than his salary, which would be a double-win for the Isles.

The Islander traded a 3rd rounder that came from Colorado’s for Wiz (which they picked up for a fourth round pick) and turn him around for the 50th overall and a 5th or possibly 4th (if the fifth isn’t available.)

Wiz has put up points on the PP, but can’t play defense, is an UFA that thinks he’s a top 2 guy and expects to be paid as such in the offseason. The Islanders aren’t making the playoffs with or without Wiznieski and the salary cap floor doesn’t really exist as long as you can pretend you were willing to spend the money. It is curious that the Islanders would move him with so soon, but it seemed a foregone conclusion they weren’t interested in re-signing him.
