Kukla's Korner Hockey

from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,
That bull’s-eye on Jay Bouwmeester’s back? No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks. It just went from bright to fluorescent. Yes, yes, even if we’ve all by now heard Jay Feaster’s downplaying the obvious addition-necessitates-subtraction theory late Wednesday afternoon.
“Honestly,’’ the Calgary Flames’ general manager was saying in announcing the acquisition and signing of puck-moving defenceman Dennis Wideman, “the good part is that we all know the cap is going up.
“We have enough contracts expiring on their own, we have enough space as we’ve looked at our budget in what we’ve committed to and what we have available, that we don’t have to move salary out to have this player with us.
“And we like the idea that our first four, as we see it, is (Mark) Giordano, Wideman, (Jay) Bouwmeester, (Chris) Butler,” he added. “It’s not a bad first four.’’
No, not a bad four.
But there’s no guarantee it’ll be the four we see opening night of the 2012-2013 season, whenever on earth that might be.
