Origin of the sport

There is still no clarity as to how the sport started. Uncertainty about a sport’s origin is very common in the case of popular sports. Several versions of the modern hockey and its older formats still exist. The prevalent belief is that hockey originated in Europe whereas some believe that the Europeans borrowed the idea from Indians. It is also said that there is little comparison between the early form of modern Ice Hockey and the games that were played before the dawn of 19th century.

What we know for sure is that the first organized tournament was played in 1875. It had only two teams, and majority of the players were from the same University.

Canada is thought to be the birthplace of the game

There are two major things the world indentifies Canada with, Maple trees and Ice Hockey. The reason obviously is that hockey has become an integral part of the country’s life. So much so that video games of hockey were launched as early as 1988. But as we have seen earlier the origin of the sport is debatable.

Canada has a history of producing the greatest hockey players and that trend still continues. But many other countries like the US and Scandinavian countries have also proved their mettle in the sport.

The Mystic Stanley Cup

Starting in 1914 it is played each year and has been cancelled only on two occasions. Once in 1919 due to the Spanish flu epidemic by which some of the Montreal Canadians’ players were affected and then in 2005 due to unavoidable reasons.

Winning the Stanley cup is considered to be the most important and glorious achievements in hockey. The final is the most thrilling match every year because so much is at stake.

The cup has evolved over the years in the sense that it was only 22cm in the beginning. Now it measures up to 80 cm as names of all the players of the winning team is inscribed at the base.

There is some mystic associated with the cup in that it has been through various mishaps. It was accidentally left by the road side once, forgotten at the airport on another occasions and thrown into the pool once. But the Cup survived all that and is still presented to the best Ice Hockey team.
