from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,
Remodeling. Not rebuilding.
That’s how general manager Peter Chiarelli sees the big picture going forward from this already-guaranteed-to-be-the-most-disappointing-season-in-Edmonton-Oilers-history headed into Monday’s NHL trade deadline.
Chiarelli, obviously, is the clubhouse leader in the blame game as the Oilers mop up an 11th season in the last 12 years. Now he has to emerge as Mr. Fix It.
Friday he made it clear the Oilers remodeling is to fix what’s been broken in the immediate future — not after freshly drafted players develop.
That, I submit, is a message that needed to be delivered to a significant number of fans trying to make decisions about season ticket renewals.
Rebuilding would be trading assets for a plethora of draft picks. Remodeling is moving assets for almost-ready-for-prime-time prospects.
