If The Pause Is Lifted, Go Right To The Playoffs Or Play Some Games First?

from the CP at CTV,

Connor McDavid is at odds with Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin.

McDavid's Oilers sat comfortably in a playoff spot when the NHL suspended its season earlier this month due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but unlike his contemporaries, Edmonton's captain thinks going right into the playoffs if the league gets the all-clear to resume would be a mistake.

Speaking on a video conference call Friday, McDavid said “a full season's a fair season” when asked how he'd like to see things play out.

And if the NHL has to shorten proceedings, the 23-year-old superstar says teams would need at least a few games to find a rhythm.

Crosby and Ovechkin said in separate video conferences Thursday they wouldn't mind if the league went right into the playoffs.

A few games to get them into a rhythm, and also let all teams end with equal games played for seeding purposes and draft order.

I agree with C McD ... players will need a few games to get their legs and lungs back ... keep their groins loose ... get back into the team rhythm (which our Red Wings never found this season).

I don’t think they should count towards the regular season standings though.

End the season where it is.
Get all 31 teams back for a 2 week mini camp and include 4 exhibition games .... playoff vs non-playoff teams ... so everyone can get back in shape.

What good is this for the non-playoff teams you may ask.
Well ... it gives them a chance to beat up on a playoff team ... number 2 the games will obviously be for charity so there is the philanthropic perspective ... and it gives them a head start on their training going into the summer workout period.

Whatever it costs to conduct these camps for the non-playoff teams can be funded partially by the NHL and partially by the teams headed to the playoffs.

Its also good for the league as a whole to get all fans in all markets involved ... and it also gives the TV networks something extra to make money off of since they lost some games at the end of the regular season.

McDavid is a fair bit younger so I don’t think he minds the extra games. I do think they should play some games to get into a rhythm though. Otherwise the first round of the playoffs would be a hot mess.

Hold the current playoff matchups based on the points percentage as of the pause.

Bring back all playoff teams for a round-robin one-game “warm up” against their conference’s opposing division (but make sure the wild-card team doesn’t play against their upcoming playoff opponent).  Each playoff team gets four games to get their legs back and their heads on straight.

Drop the puck on the post-season.  Shorten the series if required to fit the schedule or arena availability.
