If He Looks Like Babcock, Acts Like Babcock, Is Dave Hakstol Another Babcock?

from Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News,

Hakstol looks like Mike Babcock. He acts like Mike Babcock. He is a nononsense, anti-cookie-cutter coach who enjoys questioning the status quo and the way "things have always been done."

In a lot of ways, the Flyers' newest coach is Babcock Lite.

"I hope in this case we have another Mike Babcock," Flyers chairman Ed Snider said.

That the Flyers ended up with a coach whose style is similar to Babcock should not be all that surprising. After all, many thought Babcock was the Flyers' top choice to become the 19th head coach in team history. It probably is no coincidence that Hakstol was officially hired yesterday, a day after Babcock returned stateside after a week in Prague, watching the World Championships.

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall declined to discuss specifics of the 31-day process to fill the vacancy that will help shape his legacy, saying only that Hakstol was the "target all along." Hakstol's former assistant, Brad Berry, said yesterday the Flyers made two unsuccessful attempts to land Hakstol before they reached agreement on the third try.

For what to be done, Hextall to stop praising his new coach?

“He’s like Babcock!”

“Ok, how?”

“He’s got the same beautiful hair.”

“...what.”

This is ridiculous. Praising him to be like Babcock, but he’s obviously not because everyone knows that he’s not going to have ANY autonomy in Philly, just as Hextall really doesn’t, because Snider is going to be running everything and making all the decisions. Just like it’s always been. Everyone has to start climbing the ladder somewhere, and this isn’t without precedent, but saying he’s like Babcock just because Philly wanted Babcock?

It isn’t the Flyers doing this. The hockey media in Philly have been wanting Babcock since about 2 months left int he regular season. Unfortunately, most Flyers fans fell for it too (I personally think he’s somewhat overrated, but still a good coach). Truthfully, I’m glad they didn’t go the recycled coach or someone from the organization route. Hextall wants to get younger so he went out and got a coach used to dealing with young players. Now, how he gets younger and getting rid of Holmgren’s bad contracts will be interesting to watch.

You are right phillyd about the media wanting Babcock and most of us who follow the Wings knew right away Babcock would not be going to Philly.

Also, I think it is unfair to Hakstol for these types of comparisons.

Totally agree Paul. Unfortunately, all anyone with a coaching change this summer is going to do is compare their hire to Babcock. I’ve actually seen Sabres fans upset that they didn’t get Hakstol to coach their young team.

Yeah, you’re bitching about the “Babcock situation” in the comments about an article about Philly’s new coach.

smile garthy warthy. Don’t get all heated on me. My point is.. fuch their new coach, I don’t give a fuch about him or their season. This article is not about their new coach, this article is about babcock, because babs sells media.
