Hurricanes lose Jordan Staal to broken leg

From the Carolina Hurricanes:

Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, tonight announced that center Jordan Staal suffered a broken bone in the lower portion of his right leg during the team’s preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Staal, 26, was injured during the third period when he got tangled up with Sabres defenseman Josh Gorges in the third period of Carolina’s 2-0 exhibition loss. Staal will return to Raleigh with the team on Wednesday and will be evaluated by team doctors on Thursday. A timetable for his recovery has yet to be determined.

Here's a rather grainy video of the incident:

In a cap world, this can only help the Canes.
Listening to XM NHL last night, a Canes insider said that Jordan was slated to be the teams’ 4th centre.
At $6M/year, Jo-Staal is grossly overpaid.
I’ve always felt he was no better than a 3rd-line pivot. He’s good defensively, but even with top 6 minutes, I don’t think he could ever crack 55 points.

No ill intent intended to the hurricane’s, but hopefully this means that the injury evil spirits have moved on from Motown for the time being.

This would probably provide some cap space, if the Canes were a cap team to begin with.

This may put them in the market for a 3rd or 4th line centre. Ottawa has a bit of a logjam at that position - but it may be hard to make a trade work since Ottawa is also a team on a budget.

Well, the Wings have an over abundance of guys who play center. Is there a trade there that makes any sense to the Wings?

Staal is overpaid but he has one strength a lot of teams covet. He has ability to play up and down the lineup.
