from Michael Arace of the Columbus Blue Jackets,
The Blue Jackets’ second priority is acquiring a game-changing forward, preferably a top-line center. It is going to hurt. I don’t know what is in any deal with Las Vegas, but in any case, there will be pain in the deal, and there will be more pain if the Jackets can swing something for an elite sniper or playmaker.
There is talk that John Tavares — a terrific No. 1 center — is available in trade. I don’t see it. If you are the New York Islanders, you sign Tavares, and if you are Tavares and won’t sign with the Islanders, you wait a year, drive a Brinks truck to the free-agent market and choose your destination.
I would bet the Blue Jackets have made a play for Tavares and offered a boatload of assets, but any deal would be contingent on Tavares agreeing to a contract. I don’t see it.
