from the CP via the Ottawa Sun,
A dispute over scorekeeping at a women’s senior hockey game has resulted in a Medicine Hat man being charged with assaulting a referee.
But Kevin Maurice Romaniuk, 40, said yesterday he was provoked by the referee as he and his 12-year-old son were attending a game being played by his wife, Tracy.
Romaniuk, who was working the scoresheet at the game, said the dispute started over a disagreement about how to keep track of a penalty with nine seconds left in the first period.
After being ejected from the game, Romaniuk said he was walking off the ice, which is the only way to exit the arena from the timekeeper’s box, and the referee “skated alongside me, demeaning me.”
