How Good Is Rick Nash?

from Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,

“Most people I know feel like there’s more to give there yet with Rick,” said former NHL forward Ed Olczyk, now an analyst for NBC and Comcast SportsNet Chicago. “There’s still that untapped ability. You wonder what numbers he could put up if he played on a really good team with really good offensive players.

“Teams should be licking their chops to get this guy in their lineup. He has a chance to be a top-three goal-scorer in the league. Somebody is going to hit a grand slam with this guy.”

It has been suggested that Nash’s performance in the Olympics and world championships stand as proof he would be a superstar on a team with at least one other All-Star player.

“Some guys are just OK when they play with superstars. They get lost in the shuffle,” said Brian Engblom, a former NHL defenseman who is an analyst for NBC. “Rick goes the other way. He becomes a dominant player on big stages like that, and I’m sure GMs have taken note of that.”

There’s also a feeling around the NHL that Nash belongs among the second or third tier of stars in the league, an All-Star who hasn’t made his teammates better and a player whose performances have tailed off the past few seasons.

The problem is the six teams Nash will go to are all competing for a cup… None of them are going blow up their team to get this guy.

Turn Rick Nash into a Russian and ask the exact same question. I’d love to see what hockey’s talking heads have to say about a guy who’s great… but only when given other great players with whom to play.

Lazy, soft, coach killer who doesn’t get along with his teammates and seeking a trade because he’s a baby.

That’s all well and good except when you factor in the source of the article.  Portzline wants the BJs to be relevant, he wants them to get the king’s ransom that stupid Scott Howson is demanding.

The truth is that there are many, many, many people who are hoping and praying that Nash ends up nowhere near their rosters for the exact same reason that they don’t want someone like Semin on their team.  In fact, Semin is a lot more attractive to a lot of teams and fans than Nash is.

I personally really, really hope that Detroit doesn’t end up with Nash, and I hope that the only way Semin is in Detroit is if they can get someone like Bobby Ryan first and deal with the defense, THEN if there’s room under the cap and Semin is willing to take a discount.

While it appears that the most important thing on a lot of KK readers’ minds is how much the media loves Canadian players more than any other players, not everything written about every player is simple xenophobia.

I never thought I’d agree with an irishman. And I’m not going to start today.

The main thing that would concern me is that he’s 28. Scott Howson refuses to be realistic about Rick Nash’s value, asking for Couturier and B.Schenn from the Flyers, Skinner from the Hurricanes, Couture from the Sharks. WTF?

And why trade for him when Bobby Ryan is available and is much younger.

No it’s a good point and I have a lot of respect for Aaron Portzline, who has one of the tougher jobs among the sounding-board diggers, but still manages to do it with enough actual writing talent to avoid being a horrible shill like Josh Cooper.

Even if Nash were a Russian, I don’t think Portzline would change the tone of the article because he really is the go-to source of info on the Jackets and he’s not going ti keep being able to do that while trashing the guy Howson is trying to trade.

So it really isn’t Portzline, but I’m guessing if Nash were Russian, it would have been harder for him to find quotes like that from Olczyk and Engblom singing his praises.

Exactly, was referring to the Olczyk comment
