How ‘Different’ Is Tim Thomas?

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC,

One year ago, Tim Thomas was THE story. The goalie who didn’t grab an NHL stranglehold until he was 32, an opportunity he initially refused, not believing the Bruins would provide a fair chance.

But, there he was, in the middle of Boston’s Stanley Cup celebration, the backbone of a champion. The Vezina Trophy winner, MVP of the playoffs, a terrific rags-to-riches success, one of the best interviews in the league.

Now? Well, is anyone really certain what we’re dealing with?

There’s an understanding among players that goalies are different. But that adjective doesn’t do Thomas justice, especially by NHL standards. Most players try to fit in. He has no interest in doing so, and the Bruins did an excellent job of preventing most of us from realizing that. If they didn’t have a White House visit on the calendar, would we have any clue?

He’s officially lost his nugget.  As good as he CAN be I’m glad he’s out of the locker room.  Ever since the Bruins won the cup he’s been a distraction.  That’s saying something considering Marchand & Seguin’s bro-love drunkfests.  It’s Tuukka time in Boston and I can’t wait for next season.

“Two IQ Points” could also refer to Jack Edwards.

I still really don’t get the fuss over Thomas.  He’s not really that different than other goalies.  Marty Brodeur slept with his wife’s sister and is kkinda’ a well-known raging self-centered jackass unless a camera is on him.  Patrick Roy tells kids to beat up other kids and has anger issues.  Ed Belfour was a serious alcoholic, and Nikolai Khabibulin was and still might be as well.  Marty Turco is “eccentric” let’s say.  The list could go on…

By that comparison, Thomas has not done anything “wrong”.  Whether you agree with his opinions or not, he has the right to them.

I think it’s sad that we live in a society where drunk drivers (even if they literally kill someone, like Dany Heatley did), wife abusers and cheats, violent, etc, athletes or ex-athletes get free passes for their behavior but if a guy has a political opinion then look out and he’s forever crucified.  I realize Thomas is holding conservative beliefs right smack in the heart of liberal Mass. but, c’mon…. really?  It’s still no comparison to actual crimes and complete lack of morals other have shown.

The silver lining, I guess, is that Thomas could only be a story in the NHL.  In the NFL, NBA, or MLB he’d be a footnote to the drugs, shootings, etc, so common now in the other sports.
