How to Watch NHL Games When You Go Abroad

01/27/2016 at 4:09pm EST

Canadians who want to watch NHL games have a few options. First off, the CBC Sports app lets Canadian residents watch select Saturday Hockey Night games free of charge. While that might be enough for some leisure spectators, serious hockey fans will no doubt want more.

The official route would be to go through Rogers, the Canadian TV and Internet provider. This either requires an existing Rogers Share Everything plan or a Rogers Ignite bundle, or else fans must pay for a separate subscription. Just to watch the remaining half season costs $130, and a single month is $30. Obviously, that’s going to be out of the price range of many would-be watchers.

For Canadians who live or travel outside of the country, the content on both Rogers and CBC will likely be blocked from viewing due to licensing restrictions that only allow games to be streamed from within Canada. To get around this obstacle, consider using a VPN, or virtual private network. A VPN reroutes your Internet traffic through a server in a location of your choice, making it appear to websites as though you’re located in some place you’re not. ExpressVPN, for example, is a reputable provider with servers in Montreal and Toronto that are fast enough to stream live games. Just connect to those servers, and the games are no longer geo-locked.

VPNs can help hockey fans live stream games in other ways as well. If you have a trusted friend in the United States with a cable subscription, you can use their login credentials (the username and password used to pay a bill online) to watch games on the NBC Live Sports Extra app. If you’re interested in college or women’s hockey, that falls under ESPN’s domain. Once you’re logged into either app, just connect to a server in the US to unblock the stream. Don’t worry, no one will call you out for being offside.

Then there’s the unofficial route. Sidney Crosby’s sponsors don’t approve of this method. A quick Google search along the lines of “NHL streaming” will return a myriad of results for unsanctioned NHL streams. Reddit even has a dedicated subreddit where users post links to streams for every game. Many of these websites are shady, to say the least. Many contain bad ads and scripts that attempt to steal your personal data or download malware to your computer. VPNs can assist in this regard, too. Not only will nobody be able to monitor what you’re watching due to your traffic being encrypted, any attackers won’t be able to determine who or where you are. Combined with a decent ad blocker and some common sense, these websites shouldn’t pose too much of a threat.

Whether you love the Leafs, the Sens, the Canucks, or the Habs, never miss another game again. Cheer on your favourite team as they battle to win the Stanley Cup with an assist from ExpressVPN.
