Hossa Should Have Been Suspended

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
What was the first thing you thought of when you saw Hossa lean in on Hamhuis as they both chased a puck into the corner? The hit on Hossa’s teammate, Brian Campbell, courtesy of Alex Ovechkin earlier in the regular season.
In both cases, the offending players seemed to hold up slightly just as contact was made, but the defensemen were off balance enough to be sent hurtling into the boards.
Dangerous? Yes. Reckless? It depends on your definition of reckless.
Of course, in the NHL, where every day is a brand new day, the two incidents end up being treated as though they were from different planets.

The Preds can probably still take this series if they get a lead and lock it down (and overcome the obvious Patrick Kane referee bjs). Oh and…tell Ward to start smashing heads; he’s got okay hands but isn’t supposed to check people back into the 80’s?

lean in on Hamhuis
hahaha what a load of CRAP. where did Hossa ever “shove” him or show a shoving motion? it was more like an arm on his back and the dude bailed under pressure. stop looking at just the top of their bodies Western thinkers and look at the feet.
people comparing that play to the Ovechkin SHOVE are complete idiots. theres absolutely no SHOVING motion by Hossa at all. his arms are full extended when he touches him, how does he get any FORCE to shove him through that?
watch the feet.
that dude was going to bail even if a fly landed on him at that moment.
maybe Nashville just needs to not be retards too and give the puck away on power plays to ruin their series. are they going to whine about that too? you shot yourself in the foot. go home.

I think “careless” is a better word than “reckless.”
Ovechkin’s hit was more “reckless” because he appeared to really want to drill Campbell. I don’t think Hossa wanted to destroy Hamhuis, I think he just wanted to physically engage to make sure he wasn’t out-muscled. With that said, when a player is a couple feet from the wall, in a race to the end boards for the puck, Hossa has to recognize the situation and ease up.
I don’t think Hossa meant to spill him, he just needs to think about the situation a little more.

Hossa can’t be suspended.
After all the league can’t do anything to potentially damage the CHI-PIT final they so desperately want.

Hossa was moving a lot faster than Hamhuis when he made contact. Also, they’re on skates.

J.J., this reply is brilliant.
When you consider the whole “sharp blades gliding in slippery ice surface” aspect of the play, well, yeah…

The slightly different circumstances justifies the lack of suspension to Hossa. Granted, I wouldn’t have seen a one game suspension as the greatest injustice in professional sports.

Well Nashville, if it looks like your gonna lose game 6, I’d take my frustrations out on Mr. Hossas’ ____(insert body part) with a ____(insert weapon of choice). A nice two handed slash accross the wrist or forearm should do nicely. That will get him out of a game or two. Make sure the guy who does it though has never been suspended, you’d have a very good chance of not being suspended.
