Homer Hockey Play-By-Play Men

from Luke Winkie of Extra Mustard at Sports Illustrated,

MIKE HAYNES, Colorado Avalanche

Listen to how excited this grown man gets when a player on the Colorado Avalanche beats up a player on the Chicago Blackhawks. I mean, it's Doug Gilmour so I get it BUT STIILL. I don’t know much about Mike Haynes, but what I do know is that he shouted “HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES” to an opposing hockey team. That will live on forever.

JACK EDWARDS, Boston Bruins

Look, we don’t want to harp on Boston too much, but it’s really hard to write a list about homer broadcasters without returning to Beantown fairly regularly. I love Jack Edwards, he’s got that old stony voice that tends to elevate the viciousness of hockey, and I love that he wages all-out verbal warfare against the Canadiens every time they play the Bruins. It's fairly clear that Jack Edwards likely has never met a French-Canadian he didn’t want to punch in the face.

read on for a video on each plus other non-hockey homer announcers....

thanks to Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated for the pointer

That Mike Haynes call is obnoxious.  I don’t think he watched the same fight I did.

“Yeah, baby, you better believe it.”

I needed a good laugh today.  Thanks, Mike, you toothless Roy-chewing flapper.

People love to hate the homer announcers, but I’d much rather watch a guy who hates my team and doesn’t hide it than watch a national “objective” broadcast.

Purely personal preference, as I realize that the national objective guys may be better for “growing the game,” but that’s not my priority. My priority is being entertained by the announcers and homer guys do that better.

This list is awfully incomplete without the clowns that do the Pens broadcasts or Eddie Olczyk.

Criticizing local announcers and/or commentators for being “homers” is one of my biggest pet peeves. They are local. They travel with the team. In most cases, they cover the team at least somewhere near all 82 regular season games. In many cases, they also cover a handful of preseason games and a handful of postseason games. And in a few cases, they even cover things like training camps and even non-hockey events like charity deals.

These guys are team guys. It is unreasonable to criticize them for being “homers.”

Now, if you want to tell me some local crews are too kind to their generally crappy hockey clubs, I would buy that. I would never blame these guys for being homers in the sense of being outwardly happy when the team is successful, but I would criticize guys that act like the team is doing great when the reality is an entirely different story.
