Holland Looking For Size Up-Front

from Chuck Pleiness of Red Wings Front,

With 13 of the 15 teams in the Western Conference still alive in the playoff picture, trade talks have slowed to a snail’s pace.

“I’ve had some conversations over the last three or four days, a couple more today,” Wings general manager Ken Holland said in a phone interview Sunday afternoon. “There’s not a lot going on. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

“There aren’t a lot of sellers and even the teams that are out of it are in a lot of cases just re-signing their players,” Holland added. “Maybe something gives tomorrow. Right now I’d say there’s not a lot going on.”...

Holland said the Wings are set on goaltending and defense, despite Jonathan Ericsson being sidelined for up to a month with a chipped fracture in his left wrist. He suffered the injury early in the second period of Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

And there it is.  A real punch in the face to the power forwards who are supposed to score.

Franzen could easily be a premier power forward in the game today.  Easily.  Maybe since he’s one of the vets he feels he doesn’t have to work like everyone else, I don’t know.  But without Pav to cover his deficiencies, t hey’re shining through.  It really is such a waste, you know what he’s capable of.  He and Pav could be doing what Pav and Z did 3 or 4 years ago.  But instead he’d rather hide behind Pav and his wizardy.

I just don’t get how our 3rd line can be so good and play the sytem so well and the top guys have such a hard time.  Especially when yo’ure struggling, these vets all know the system protects you.  This lack of leadership (and by that, I mean fire, spark… not these business meetings about how we’re going to do this that and the other.. talk talk talk talk talk bloah blahb labh blah…  sometimes you have to push some buttons to get results) is where the old gaurd is REALLY missed.  3rd liners look to be taking over but wont have a leadership impact on the team as a whole until some of these vets our close to done if not gone.

Which is why he was signed long term. He is not earning his paycheck. As you pointed out, his deficiencies are glaring. He doesn’t use his size, and, tends to shy away from tough battles in front of the net and along the boards.  Disappointing to say the least.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Or maybe… just MAYBE… Franzen is a 30-goal scorer, and not the 40- or 50-goal guy you all want him to be and think he should be in your minds.

Keep in mind, he was drafted as a checking center who could score a little.  20-30 Goals out of him wasn’t even seen as probable.

Again, I refuse to cast blame on the guy scoring actual goals, and instead choose to cast blame on guys like Cleary, Bertuzzi, and yes Zetterberg, who aren’t scoring goals at all (and yet that’s somehow OK to all of you?).

Weck up to thees.
