Hockey Talk On A Late Saturday Night

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- For those who value the save percentage statistic, consider this: Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller has only been above .918 once in his career. Can you say overrated?<.p>

- The next NHL coach to be fired will be a) Todd Richards; b) Jack Capuano; c) Joe Sacco; d) Glen Gulutzan. Extra points will given to those who can identify which teams the coach represents.

- On Tuesday, Jay Bouwmeester plays his 735th game, making him the NHL player with the most regular-season games played without a single playoff appearance. The previous record was held by Guy Charron at 734. And the way things are going in Calgary, it’s not like he’s going to be in the playoffs any time soon.

Not exactly sure what the author is trying to state. If given that threshold, Miller has hit or exceeded .918 twice. Once it was exactly .918 and the second time was .929. Eddie Belfour was over that threshold only twice and Roy was over that threshold 3 times, with the first time coming mid career in the 96-97 season. Hell, Brodeur has only been above that number 3 times. Those are hall of fame goalies. Is Miller Hasek, who eclipsed that number 10 times in the NHL? No. Not even close. Never heard anybody comparing the two though. But that shouldn’t diminish what kind of goalie Miller is. He is a very, very good goalie.

Not sure how you could have misinterpreted what he was saying so thoroughly, but he meant that the stat of save percentage was overrated, since a goalie of Miller’s high caliber has only been over .918 once.
