Hockey Notes On The First Day Of February

02/01/2014 at 5:28pm EST

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- Hockeynomics 101: Ryan Callahan, the 227th leading scorer in the NHL, is thumbing his nose at the $6-million, five-year offer from the Rangers when he should have grabbed the offer, screamed with glee and signed immediately.

- Why you take Stamkos to Sochi, even if he can’t begin the Olympics playing: The top five Canadian goal scorers in the NHL are Corey Perry, Patrick Sharp, Sidney Crosby, Chris Kunitz and Ryan Getzlaf. Most are not, what you’d call, natural goal scorers. They may need him later in the tournament.

- Ben Scrivens had a game for the ages, is a terrific person to talk to, but don’t get too carried away. I counted 41 goalies on NHL rosters I would rather have than him and that includes Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer.

more including a few words from Ken Holland on Pavel Datsyuk participating in the Olympics...
