Hockey Notes Late In August

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun with his weekly column touching on all things sports, but of course we care only about hockey...

- Thought to consider: Both the coach and general manager who carefully appointed Dion Phaneuf captain of the Leafs have been fired by the team.

- Another reason why I have next to great difficulty for the CORSI analytic statistic in hockey. I saw a team adjusted CORSI ranking for this past season. Tyler Seguin of the Bruins was rated fifth best in the NHL. The same Seguin whom Bruins coach Claude Julien kept on the third line, moving rookie Carl Soderberg from press box to first-line centre when Patrice Bergeron got hurt. I’ll take Julien’s instincts over strange numbers anytime.

It might be because Seguin was on the third line that his corsi was so high. Most of us would rate Seguin as producing more offense and defense than the average third liner, which would lead to him getting a high corsi while on the third line playing against other team’s third lines. Boston also had good depth and although I don’t know who Seguin usually played with, his linemates may have been better than other third liners as well.

In that way, it’s no different from any other well known stat. If you play a good offensive player against third liners, he’ll likely put up more goals and assists than he normally does, and probably a better plus/minus stat as well.
