from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
- You will know how badly the Chicago Blackhawks want to tank this coming season based on who they sign to play goal. If they make a deal to eat Petr Mrazek’s contract, or worse to use him in goal, they’re aiming to finish last in the NHL. Also available from the Blackhawks, the diminutive goal-scoring maven Alex DeBrincat, who is third from his draft year in scoring, behind only Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine.
- TNT had a great first season as one of two American networks doing NHL games. ESPN, the other network — funny to call ESPN that — had an uneven first season as a carrier. The TNT panel was better. TNT top play-by-play men were better. TNT entertainment was better. Despite great work from Ray Ferraro and Emily Kaplan, ESPN needs to hire some hockey minds, off-air, to keep pace with the other network.
- Weird stuff going on with the Boston Bruins. First, they fire coach Bruce Cassidy. Now we keep hearing that Seattle assistant Jay Leach, a former Bruins AHL coach, is the top candidate to take over in Boston.
