GLENDALE, ARIZONA—- Phoenix Coyotes center Andy Miele won the 2011 Hobey Baker Award on Friday night. The award, given annually to the NCAA’s best hockey player, was presented at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Minnesota. Miele is the second Coyotes player in franchise history to win the award (Kevin Porter, 2008). Scott Pellerin, who played 23 games with the Coyotes in 2002-03, won the award in with the New Jersey Devils organization in 1992.
The 5-foot-9, 180 pound Miele had an outstanding 2010-11 season with Miami University, leading the RedHawks and the entire NCAA with 24-47-71 in just 39 games. Miele averaged an impressive 1.82 points per game while his 24 goals tied for 10th in the country. His 71 points are 11 more than anyone else in the nation this year and the most since Colorado College’s Peter Sejna totaled 82 points in 2002-03. Miele ranks second on Miami’s single-season assists list and has recorded the most assists since 1978-79. In addition, he is tied for second in single-season points at Miami, which are also the most points since 1978-79.
The 22-year-old native of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan has earned several honors this year including being named the CCHA Player of the Year and the First-Team All-CCHA and CCHA Tournament MVP after leading the RedHawks to their first Mason Cup in school history in March.
Miele, an assistant captain, captured the CCHA scoring title in a landslide, recording 56 points in league play - the most by any player since 1991-92. His 40 assists in CCHA play also ranked first and more than anyone else had points (marking the first time it’s occurred in CCHA history and the most points registered since 1996-97). His 16 goals in the CCHA tied for second in the league. In 141 career NCAA games with Miami University, Miele collected 60-100-160 and 134 penalty minutes.
