History Does Repeat Itself

In late January, 2005, I started a blog called Breaking Sports.  My intention at the time was to cover the sporting world, but that quickly became a hockey only website.

Today I went back to the first days of Breaking Sports which started about 4 1/2 months into the 2004-05 NHL lockout and was able to track down some of the links I provided at the time.

For instance, RDS (translated) on the negotiations and Stephen A. Smith on Gary Bettman.

I find it fascinating to read some of the things I posted regarding the CBA negotiations back then and how many of it is starting or will repeat itself this time around.

The only thing I see differently is the fans losing interest much quicker this time around.

Yeah, this lockout is mostly going to be a yawner IMO.  If a deal isn’t struck pretty soon and the Classic is cancelled, the NHL will dump the whole season really soon after that.

I’d bet the next big kerfluffle will be when the NHL leaks it’s plan to use replacement players to start the 2013 season.

So we’re talking about maybe two or three points of actual news in the middle of 8-12 months of empty noise.  That wouldn’t keep peoples attention if it was happening in the NFL or NBA.  For a much less relevant sport like the NHL it’s like handing every NHL fan full bottles of Ambien.
