The morning after expressing his dissatisfaction with his team’s first two periods and got away with an ugly win, Carlyle stopped a drill early into practice and turned up the temperature with a expletive-filled breakdown of why he felt they were lucky to defeat the Sharks.

“I’ve heard that speech before,” said defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who couldn’t help but smile.

The calmer, softer coach in his second go-round with the Ducks gave way to the fiery, blunt bench boss that was him in his first tenure but there was a method to this brief fit of madness. Lack of energy and focus wasn’t going to be tolerated.

“We had a conversation of expectations,” Carlyle said of the one-sided address. “We as a group had to start to reach for higher expectations. We’ve got a short time frame here now to prepare our group for opening night.”
