Hey Pittsburgh, Do You Want Gonchar Again?

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

If the NHL does start a shortened season next month, don’t expect Sergei Gonchar to finish it with the Ottawa Senators.

The veteran defenceman, going into the final year of a contract paying him $5.5 million per season, will be targeted for a trade by the Pittsburgh Penguins once a collective bargaining agreement is reached.

Whether Gonchar’s former team waits until whatever date is set for the trade deadline or a makes a pitch before the season begins isn’t known, but league sources say Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero has interest in bringing back the 38-year-old.

The Penguins never wanted to lose Gonchar in the first place when he signed a three-year, $16.5-million deal with the Senators on July 1, 2010. Shero wouldn’t give Gonchar the additional year he wanted on a new deal.

SOOO now he will trade something for him in the 3rd Year he didn’t want to give to Gonchar ????

Garrioch’s right that nobody here wanted him gone…we just didn’t want to devote 8% of the team’s cap space to a guy as old as him for 3 years.

Garrioch’s also right that he looked like trash for one year in Ottawa and much better the next (though he is showing some age now). Guy followed the same pattern when Craig Patrick signed him. B-rutal first year, better second year, great next 2 years.

Guess they’re not concerned about his age though. I’m sure their European scouts are getting a good look at him since they’re watching his team anyway.

That’s a little over two million bucks (if there even is a season). Don’t forget the “Burke” amendment that allows for teams to pick up some of the outgoing salary.

I think this is a real good idea. For all Letang’s skill, strength and the insane amount of ground he covers, he’s not a super high-iq player. Whatever else a 38 year old Sergei Gonchar is, he’s certainly not hurting for brains.

Plus, the guy can QB a powerplay effectively even when his arm’s in a sling.

Last I heard Gonchar was tearing it up in the KHL.  There’s another old goat in the scoring race as well.  Seniors having a good run int he KHL.

I wouldn’t be against it depending on the price of a trade.  Gonchar would hopefully be a 3rd pairing guy get ice time in the pp.  salary would mean nothing at that point.  Pens have a huge hole on D right now if one of the young guys don’t step up.
