Hemsky Re-Signs With Edmonton

via the Edmonton Oilers,

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with right-winger Ales Hemsky on a two-year, $10 million contract extension. The 28-year-old has scored five goals and 26 points in 41 games this season.

added 9:16pm, from David Staples of The Cult Of Hockey,

Many NHL writers, and former NHL star Mike Modano, suggest Ales Hemsky got too much in his new two-year, $5 million per year deal. I think Hemsky got the right amount. This deal made sense for the Oilers and for Hemsky.

Here’s the reaction on Twitter:

Mike Modano: “2 yrs/10 million for hemsky. Scored over 20 goals twice in 9yrs.. WTF..!!?”

David Shoalts, Globe and Mail: “Has The Riddler or The Joke been seen lately at Edmonton Oilers HQ with cannisters of stupid gas?”

Scott Burnside of ESPN: “Ales Hemsky; two years $10 million just goes to show you $10 million doesn’t get you too far these days in the NHL does it?”

Any time you can pay an underachieving, injury-prone, non-physical player midway through the worst statistical year of his career, one million dollars per goal he contributes, you’ve got to do it.
