“Hello, Son? It’s Me, Dad. You’ve Been Traded.” Plus News from the Farm:11/18/10

Our weekly look at the performance of the Southeast Division’s top minor league affiliates from the week gone by kicks off this week with a thought on Calgary Flames GM Darryl Sutter trading his own son, Brett, to the Carolina Hurricanes (where he’ll report directly to AHL Charlotte, assuming he clears waivers).

I remarked on Twitter that, though I had found trouble a time or two in my younger days, my father had only threatened to ship me to another country – a reference to the younger Sutter’s recent run-in with the law, stemming from his alleged involvement in a bar fight in Scottsdale, Arizona. Several outlets have reported, however, that the trade – Sutter, a seldom-used forward, and defenseman Ian White to Carolina for d-man Anton Babchuk and grinding winger Tom Kostopoulos – was in the works long before the incident in question.

Even so, when I passed the story along to my dad, who is very familiar with the Sutter lineage as a longtime hockey fan himself, he found the idea hilarious.

“I thought about trading you several times,” Dad ‘admitted’, chuckling heartily. “Mexico got close once. But I never thought I was getting good value. I guess it all worked out.”

Hopefully the change of scenery works out for the young Sutter, who joins his cousin, Brandon, as a member of the Hurricanes organization. And, hopefully, he and his old man can enjoy the kind of laugh that I did with my dad last night when they talk about the uniqueness of father trading son somewhere down the road.

I’ll keep this in my hip pocket, too, for when my boys get older. “Owen, Arron,” I might say. “We’ve decided to flip you two to Winnipeg. They’re offering us their whole draft. Sorry.”

Nah… Never in a million years…

On to last week’s results:
