Kukla's Korner

Kukla's Korner Hockey

Hello, Hello… I’m at a Place Called Vertigo!

Well Penguins fans, are you happy?

(Can you all tell that I just saw an epic performance from U2 last night???)

Greetings Penguins fans and people of Kukla’s Korner! It is a pleasure to join you here!

My name is Brian Metzer and I am a hockey blogger, podcaster, broadcaster, webmaster, and all around media mastodon… at least according to my Twitter profile.

I have been around the block and on the scene for quite some time breaking in to the hockey blogging game back in 2004. I started doing it for bigger entities in 2005 and since that time have written for a number of outlets including Versus.com. I am also a Penguins correspondent for XM Home Ice and TSN Radio 1050.

Many of you may already be familiar with my work covering the Penguins and National Hockey League, but for those of you who are not — here is my story.

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I still live in the Commonwealth in a small town called Bloomfield, which is considered by many to be the “Little Italy” of Pittsburgh.

I am a lifelong sports fan, with my favorites being Hockey and Football. However, of the two, hockey has always been my first love.

My initial exposure to the game occurred when I was nine years old and I have been smitten ever since. The game was something that I shared with my father, which is a big reason why I fell so hard for it but there is another that really sucked me in – the play of Mario Lemieux.

Lemieux came into the league right around the time that I could comprehend the game and there was no better salesman. This tall, lanky kid from Laval could do things on the ice that no one thought possible. He immediately sucked me in and the rest is history. I have spent the last 27 years being a disciple of this great game.

I have played the game for many years, spent time as a referee for youth leagues in my area and even helped coach from time to time. I am proud to say that I was part of some pretty formidable dek hockey teams along the way too, winning one championship but ultimately losing far more than I care to mention.

Playing, refereeing and coaching locally was great, but I always wanted to get more involved with the sport that I loved. I had to seek out other ways, since making it to the National Hockey League as any of the above just wasn’t going to be an option for me.
If I wasn’t going to make it to the big leagues as a player, my fall back dream had always been to get involved in a broadcasting or writing capacity. Especially, when I stopped to consider that I had grown to appreciate and look up to many of the guys who were reporting on the games almost more than those playing in them.

Unfortunately it took me many years to make a run at my writing/broadcasting dreams and I wasted a lot of time going to school for Business Admin and working a ton of office and management jobs, even spending 6 months selling Xerox copy machines! Let me be the first to tell you… even though every company has a copy machine, no one buys them! At least as far as my sales career can vouch.

I was kicking along in the business world and working as the Director of a Home Care Agency when I decided to take a chance. I started to heavily pursue writing about hockey again in the season leading up to the NHL’s Lockout. I think I decided to do it because so many folks in Pittsburgh had lost interest in our team; as they just weren’t very good at the time.

I began seeking out internet opportunities and was eventually able to hook up with a popular news and rumor site that was on its way to getting famous for its rumors regarding the aforementioned lockout. I had a number of pieces published on the site before becoming their featured Penguins blogger in September of 2006.

I remained with the site until March 5, 2010, when I left to launch my own project www.fromthepoint.com and to officially begin my gig with Versus, who I had been doing projects for since 2009.

Over the years I have been lucky enough to cover three Stanley Cup Finals, a Winter Classic, an All-Star Game, Finland’s run to the Silver medal back in 2010 and hundreds of regular season games. I am also lucky enough, being based in Pittsburgh and covering most Penguins events, to interact with the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Ray Shero, Dan Bylsma and everyone else in that great organization on a regular basis, which adds to my coverage.

While my site will continue and allow me (and my scribes) to cover a wide range of topics, I will be devoting my work at KK to the Flightless Bird. I am excited to join the team here as it has been one of my favorite sites for hockey news and information for many years. I am also grateful to work alongside some amazing bloggers, especially my old pal Jon Jordan.

I would also like to compliment Tony as he exits this space. He did a wonderful job with the Confluence and it is my privilege to take over where he left off. Hopefully you guys will get what you need from what I provide.
That brings me to the end of a very long winded greeting message.

Allow me to wrap up by saying:  It is a pleasure to join this community. Kuklas Korner serves as a home to a variety of uber talented writers and a large group of insightful readers. I am looking forward to diving into this pool and promise to do my best for you. I don’t report BS, I tell it like it is and can provide you with inside news, information and access that you can’t always get everywhere else.

I am a fan of music, movies and everything pop culture, so don’t be surprised to see a reference to a song, movie etc from time to time in my pieces.

I love feedback, so please drop me comments or email as often as you like. You folks are why we all do this. I’ll be back soon with my first actual blog!
