Heavyweights Are A Dying Breed

Going into Tuesday night's NHL action, there were only 95 fighting majors in 128 games played, down 49 per cent from 188 fighting majors in the same period two years ago. What you really need to know is that if these early-season numbers hold firm, fighting in the NHL will be at its lowest level since the 1969-70 season. In fact, four of the seven most frequent fighters from the 03-04 season -- that would be Oliwa, Matt Johnson, Garrett Burnett and Doug Doull -- are no longer in the league. If a tough guy can't play some minutes, contribute something over and above an arranged fight with another tough guy, it would appear his days are numbered.
