Has Mike Richards Put A Bounty On P.K. Subban?

from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,

“He’s (Subban) a guy that’s come in the league and hasn’t earned respect,” Richards told Team 990 after the game.

“It’s just frustrating to see a young guy like that come in here and so much as think that he’s better than a lot of people. You have to earn respect in this league. It takes a lot. You can’t just come in here as a rookie and play like that. It’s not the way to get respect from other players around the league.

“Hopefully, someone on their team addresses it, because, uh, I’m not saying I’m going to do it, but something might happen to him if he continues to be that cocky.”

Those are the kind of inflammatory words that should warrant action from the NHL head office, but as Subban prepared for tonight’s game at the Bell Centre against the Nashville Predators, he seemed confused by Richards’s comments.

“There’s a lot of trash talk on the ice,” veteran defenceman Hal Gill said. “It’s part of the game, but I’ve never heard P.K. say anything that’s disrespectful.”

Added Subban: “As long as (head coach Jacques) Martin and my teammates are happy with my game, I have to continue to (play hard). I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I’m still learning.”

Meh.

Personally, I could care less about what comes out of anybody’s mouth on the rink if they can back up their words with actions.  Everybody brings something different to the table as a player, PK still seems to be backing up his words on the rink with respect to the game and his teammates (and a high level of play).

If the guy starts going Matt Cooke or Shawn Avery cukoo with decisions to physically impair others, then I’ll start raising a critical eyebrow on who PK Subban really is.

That’s nothing new. Most people are confused when Richards opens his mouth.

Richards sounds like a pussy here.

I completely agree with Subban.  He came into the league tossed right into the fire and he excelled.  He’s earned his right to be in the big leagues.  If Richards has a beef, talk to Subban, don’t go crying to the reporters because some kid got under a grown man’s skin.  That’s fuchin’ hilarious.

If I were in Subbans shoes I’d be doing the exact same thing.  Play as hard as you can, take every advantage you can.  If you see Richards is raggin’ when you happen to be playing him, talk some trash and throw him off his game.  Sucks cause I’ve always liked Richards as a player, but now I know he’s a cry baby of a man.

Richards is just bitter because Subban got under his skin and got him to lose his temper. Richards knows he looked like a fool in the game when it happened. You’d think he’d realize that saying something like this in the media just makes him look more foolish.

Sticks and stones, right? If PK Subban is hurting people’s feelings, perhaps everyone that’s offended should retire.

How exactly does this become the kind of thing that ‘warrants action by the NHL head office’?

Nobody disciplined Hitchcock when he said ‘somebody is going to make (Martin Havlat) eat his lunch.’

I guess, according to the Montreal media, nobody gets to criticize the habs except the Montreal media.

It appears to me that Richards has ways to go to being an actual captain…and I like the guy.

Hey Evil, for someone whos constantly defending Crosby on this blog ( about being called a crybaby)you crap on Richards and call him a cry baby? crosby called out Subban last spring and this fall i didnt hear a peep from you? he was calm cool and collected and sent a message through the media because they are playing in philly on monday.if Subban is any kind of man he tells richards in pregame skate were dancing on the opening faceoff. Richards has 30+ nhl fights and if you cant read between the lines hes saying that if you talk tough you have to back it up.I live in montreal and have gone to 5 games including preseason and i can tell you subban has backed down from 10+ straight up challlenges some from guys smaller than him.I heard wisnewski tell him shut up and lets drop the gloves after he called Wis a pussy.Subban smiled stuck out his tongue for 5 seconds and hid behind a linesman find the video on youtube.he did the same thing to Kyle Brodziak. if you talk tough but dont drop the gloves then you lose respect and that rep never leaves you.We already have a guy like that Lapierre. I like him he can skate his decisions are questionable sometimes but hell learn and get better but i can tell you alot of players on the ice are pissed at him not because of his play but because of his mouth.JVR callenged him to a fight after subban called him a wimp the other night and he skated away laughing My friend was sitting behind Prices net and has it on cell phone camera. He needs to drop the gloves 2 or 3 times and hell regain respect around the league, if he doesnt Richards wont be the last to call hom a phoney.Idont get it hes 6 deet and strong just drop em and you wont hear these things anymore.Richards has alot of respect in the league ASk crsoby and ovechkin who they call their toughest matchup, theve stated its richards many times and both those guys hate him.Look at at all thats being said.John Tavares never talks on the ice and remarked jokingly to the media after a game against the habs that Subban is the toughest guy in the league with his gloves on and these guys were teammates!!!  LOL i wish the kid success but this stuff was happening last year in the AHL too they partnered him with Alex Henry because he was constantly being challenged for his talk and backed down everytime.thats not his game hes so so defensively and Price is covering up alot of mistakes right now but when 5 and 6 spots start showing up for the other team on the board and hes -2 or -3 well see where we are then. The league adjusts and video doesnt lie, other teams will target him and he loses his free pass.he will have to drop the gloves at some point especially when you get called out in public like that
