Matt Cooke is scum, period! I’m just not sure who is worse the NHL office for allowing his style of play or Cooke himself. Yes, clean hit last night, but he is still the dirtiest player in the game.

I agree and appreciate this.  Thank you.

The thing is…Cooke has some skill to his game.  He plays on one of the best third lines in the NHL, he’s scored at least 30 points five times in his career and in both seasons with the Pens and he’s a regular on the top PK unit with Staal. 

Other “instigators” like Ruutuu or Kaleta don’t put up that kind of production while being a dick…the only guy that outproduces Cooke while playing the same type of role is Avery.

I know he’s pretty much universally hated around the league and by every fan that isn’t a Pens’ homer - though, nowadays who on the Pens ISN’T universally hated?...haha - and I’m sure I’ll absolutely hate him if/when he isn’t a Penguin anymore…but right now he’s an upgrade over just about anyone else that you can get to bring in and do what he does.  He does some stupid and dirty crap, but when you walk that line like he does, it’s bound to happen.

The strange thing is that no one ever mentions Steve Ott when talking dirty…you’d figure the actual NHL survey of PLAYERS saying that he is the dirtiest player in the league would garner some attention. 

There are a lot of dirty players in the league (or players that can be dirty) the difference is that…it’s pretty much Cooke’s job to be dirty (see: Carcillo).  He’s the guy you hate, that’s his job.  And when he actually does something offensively you only hate him more.
