Kukla's Korner

Kukla's Korner Hockey

Greetings from Raleigh!

Well, we made it, and in some pretty decent time, as best I can tell.

But I will say this: Nine-and-a-half hours in a car with anyone is trying – and my partner on The Bolts Beat, ESPN 1040’s Mike Corcoran didn’t even do anything wrong. In fact, he did many things right! I mean, have you ever seen anyone eat three, count ‘em, three bacon cheeseburgers from Wendy’s in one sitting??? In fairness, I should counter that with an admittance to crushing about eight double stuffed Oreos once the energy meter started plummeting but, man, was that burger bombing awfully impressive!

We arrived right around 12:30 am and were basically settled in the room by 1:00. I considered a quick pint at what was described as the only place that would still be open right here in the vicinity of our hotel but decided against it in favor of some shuteye.

After some brain-rotting via Policewomen of Cincinnati on the tube (humanity, I’ve never had such little faith in you), I drifted away with the chance to crash for as long as my heart desired, with no morning responsibilities for the first time since August of 2008 (when the first of my two amazing sons was born)…

And I popped up right around 7:15…

Hell, beats 6:00 am!!!

Today, largely, is wide open. We’ll head down to pick up our credentials at the league hotel (the one, for which, we missed the reservation deadline and, thus, ended up here on the other side of town) and then putz around downtown for much of the day. The NHL Fan Fair is going on at the Convention Center and there’s some kind of street celebration downtown later on so maybe we’ll make an appearance at one or both of those happenings.

Media availability is listed both before and after tonight’s player draft so we’ll pile up as much material as possible from that gathering and get something out there tonight before a league-sponsored media reception at some joint called Natty Greene’s Pub & Brewing Company (which, lo and behold, sounds like just my kind of place!)

The locals won’t stop pushing Carolina barbeque, so I imagine that will have to be explored at some point as well.

I’ll snap some pictures throughout the day today and include those in later posts.

Be sure to follow along via Twitter for real-time updates throughout this weekends

Funny you mention Wendy’s.  Your post yesterday got me to thinking about Wendy’s’ s’s's’s down there in NC.

Last I knew, Wendy’s in that area had something called a “Carolina Classic Burger” that I highly recommend if you get the chance.  When I was living in Charlotte in the late 90’s I used to devour them in mass quantities because my apartment was a block away from a Wendy’s and I could walk there.  They have something like slaw, chili, and mustard on them.  Yum.  They can make them as singles, double, or triples.

I’m sure someone local down there will have a fit about me mentioning them but… I’m a northerner and we don’t have anything like that up here (wish we did).  I wouldn’t go out of my way to nab one but… if you’re hitting a Wendy’s on your way back down, they’re worth considering, if you’ve had your fill of Q.

We’ve considered moving down to the triad area there several times and never have completely given the idea up.  May still do so.

I’d like to hear from you re: the fans down there for the ASG Weekend.  Are they locals mostly?  Or are they out-of-towners?  What teams have the most fan reps there?  Are the crowds decent for the Fan Fair and such?

Is there tailgating?

The Pit, Jon, THE PIT!!! Just 2-3 blocks from where you are wandering aboot.
If you go there and eat, and don’t enjoy the meal, I will pay for it. Seriously. Try the mac and cheese. It goes good with Q.

I once had a classmate from eighth grade who downed three 2-liter bottles of Pepsi and three 14-oz bags of Doritos in one sitting.  Needless to say, it didn’t come out very comfortably the next day.

From what I saw today, roaming around, the turnout is excellent. And we noticed representation for every team in the league so far, save for - ironically enough - the Lightning! smile

We toured Fan Fair before the public was let in but there was quite the line waiting behind us!

I’ll be posting an update shortly.
