Green Re-Signs With Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Mike Green to a three-year, $18.25 million contract extension, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. Green will earn $6 million in 2012-13 and 2013-14 and $6.25 million in 2014-15.

“We are pleased to re-sign Mike Green to a new contract,” said McPhee. “Mike is one of the best young defensemen in the National Hockey League and is just entering his prime. He will continue to be a key part of our team moving forward.”

I guess this pretty much answers the question:  “Now What Washington?”

Not a bad deal if he can stay healthy. If not, then it’s a short enough deal for Washington to get away from relatively unharmed.

If TPH were still playing, would Tick Tock still be paying him $6.5 million?  For a seven-time Norris winner?

I think the term’s the important thing for Washington here. If Green can stay healthy and get back to putting up 80 points per year, this could be a bargain. If not, 3 years is long enough to figure that out and, even at the money Green will be making, that’s not enough to cripple your team building. Heck, even if you had to buy him out, that’s only about a $2 million penalty per year.

1) WOW is al I can say here!  A guy gets a raise after showing hie is injury prone and no longer able to produce points at anywhere near the pace he did 2 years ago?
2) A 1 year deal would have made sense. Show he deserves a raise and next summer give him the 5 year max contract for 6 mil(under the new CBA).  Unless he returns to his 2009 form and scores upwards of 50 points this is a aweful deal that the Caps will be tryig to unload by next summer!
