Great Use Of Broken Sticks

from Jeff Miller of the OC Register,

His hobby, his passion, his calling was helping others walk, this man who, just four months ago, found himself crawling to the bathroom.

His legs turned lifeless by a tumor choking his spinal cord, Jim Pull suddenly couldn’t even help himself, a cane maker unable to use his own product.

“Yeah, it was pretty wild,” Pull says. “It wasn’t pleasant.”

Surgery on July 20 – “My new birthday,” Pull calls it – removed the tumor, gave him his legs back and returned him to his garage and work bench, where Pull resumed doing what he usually does for others – turning useless into useful again.

The man produces canes, possibly the hippest canes in the world. He makes them from broken hockey sticks. The shaft of the old stick becomes the shaft of the new cane, complete with whatever tape job the owner originally applied.
