Great news for English speaking Habs fans

Love RDS but wish you could watch the Habs in English more often than, say, the odd Saturday? I carry good news.

TSN announced this afternoon that they are now the exclusive regional English-language broadcaster of the Montreal Canadiens. TSN will carry 24 Habs games this season, and at least 30 over for 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

The games will be available on a TSN alternate feed in Quebec, Atlantic Canada and Eastern Ontario, which includes Ottawa, Belleville, Kingston and Pembroke. A complete list of the broadcast schedule, along with more information, is available here:

TSN to broadcast regional Montreal Canadiens games

Thus far, it appears the only carrier to host the new channel is Bell Satellite TV, but negotiations with other carriers (Rogers, Eastlink, etc) are ongoing.

Personally, I like watching Montreal games in French. Fond memories from my childhood, I guess. I agree that this gives English Canadians an opportunity to catch more games, no doubt. Seems that TSN is really trying to position itself as the place to watch hockey. I wonder how the CBC feels about this?

The CBC’s new president commented the other day that they are going to be more aggressive when it comes to bidding on sports. I think they see the threat from TSN, especially after losing the Olympics. The next round of bidding is years off, but it should be competitive to say the least.
