from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
At the midway point of the 2007 Stanley Cup tournament, hockey experts are beginning to wonder whether the game is in trouble again.
Goal scoring is down. Columnists are griping about the absence of offence. At Hockey Night in Canada, Ron MacLean and Don Cherry have been complaining about the officiating and the decline of physical play.
Has the game really regressed, despite the continued zero tolerance toward restraining fouls? Or is it the crackdown on obstruction that’s responsible for the malaise?
We asked some prominent hockey broadcasters for their thoughts.
