Good In Net

from Kevin Weekes of CBC,

Here is a list of NHL teams with solid enough goaltending that I pretty much expect them to stand pat in net at the trade deadline.

1. NEW YORK RANGERS

Henrik Lundqvist: Has been lights out. Two technical adjustments have taken his game to the next level. Have of you detected what they are? I believe Lundqvist is in the race with Evgeni Malkin for the Hart Trophy. His 42-save performance in Boston was a statement game.

Martin Biron: Never mind the recent loss to Chicago. Biron has been as good on the ice as he is in the dressing room. Excellent goalie partner for Lundqvist.

2. BOSTON BRUINS

Tim Thomas: Thomas is playing like, well, Thomas.

Tuukka Rask: Biding his time. But I have a feeling he’ll be No. 1 for the Bruins as soon as next year. Stay tuned.

Red Wings no longer in the NHL, Kevin?

Everything I always expect from a Kevin Weekes article.  Loads of opinion and a blissful ignorance of actual facts.

I guess Jimmy Howard must suck, and everyone thinks Holland is lying when he says McDonald is a solid backup and they have no plans to trade for a goalie. How is Detroit not in the list of top 15 teams as far as goaltending?

If the knock is that McDonald isn’t good enough to take them to the Cup, then that argument works against about 13 teams on that list. Does anyone think NYR will go far if Biron is forced to start in the playoffs?

The only teams with a real solid 1-2 goalie tandem is Boston, Vancouver and Nashville. And Vancouver might not even be there what with Luongo’s earned reputation as a choker.

Yeah, that’s exactly what it means.

His comment about them being fine now that MacDonald has been playing well would be fine, except that Detroit wasn’t fine with just Howard yet Calgary’s fine with just Kiprusoff.  Howard’s numbers are better this year.  I know though, Kiprusoff’s a difference maker in the playoffs.  I think his 3.36 GAA and .897 SV% his past two trips to the playoffs combined would beg to differ.  Don’t try giving me that “team around him” crap either.  If he’s that much better that he alone makes Calgary fine with goaltending his numbers should be at least clost to Howard’s career playoff 2.63 GAA and .919 SV%, and they’re not.

Shady 80 disses MacDonald who ended up the the Islanders job over Weekes.  Sour Cherrys there?

You’ll have to forgive Garth. Hyperbole makes the chip on his shoulder more painful to bear.

the chip on his shoulder

The Canucks got him stoned and taught him how to loosen up one time.  It was terrifying.
