Good Question- Why Does Luongo Need A New Agent?

from Dan Murphy of Sportsnet,

Roberto Luongo changed agents and this has to be seen as a shot across the bow of the Vancouver Canucks.

Why else would a guy with nine years left on a contract fire his agent?

This tells me Luongo is not coming to camp quietly (and probably doesn’t want to come at all).

This tells me Gilles Lupien told Luongo that he couldn’t help find him a trade out of Vancouver so Luongo told him he was fired.

This tells me Luongo has now entrusted CAA Sports (JP Barry and Pat Brisson) to find him the trade Lupien couldn’t.

As long as Luongo’s contract was a standard players deal (no reason why it wouldn’t have been) then Lupien will continue to receive a cheque thanks to the 12-year “sucky” contract he helped negotiate with GM Mike Gillis.

So what’s in it for CAA?

This article’s dumb. All speculation, nowhere does the author try and contact anyone. Not even any “anonymous” sources cited; he’s just spitballing and drawing an awful lot of conclusions based on an agent switch.

Why does Luongo need CAA? Plenty of possible reasons.

Maybe he thinks he isn’t getting enough endorsement deals (CAA can help with that).

Maybe he sees the so-called “cheat” deals vanishing around the league and fears being bought out once an accountant for the Canucks notices just what cap recapture is going to do to them when Luongo retires/if he’s traded.

Maybe he wanted 5 years when his contract expired but Lupien talked him into a much longer deal and, realizing he’s stuck somewhere he doesn’t want to be, he dropped the axe in anger.

Point is, these are just blind guesses just like everything in this article.
