Go Vote

This is not a political ad, statement or meant to sway you in any way. I believe you have a mind of your own and will vote for whoever is the best candidate for our county.

Instead, I want to share a story...

I rent out two rooms in my home and one room is rented by a Dr. from Syria with Christian background who is serving his residency at a nearby hospital.

He has been here for 18 months and we have become good friends.

Over the last three months or so he has been waiting for a letter from the Department of Homeland Security which would either deny or approve his application for asylum in the USA.

He asked me to open it if he was not home and call him if it was good news and not tell him if it was bad.

Saturday, the envelope arrived and I opened it- APPROVED.

I called him and told him and he became very flustered and asked if I could snap a picture and send it to him. I did so and he texted me back saying this was the greatest day of his life.

He can now move forward to becoming an American Citizen, a five-year process but that doesn't matter to him. He is living in "the greatest country in the world."

When he came home he brought some fantastic Syrian food with him and he was on cloud nine. We talked about his life in Syria and how everyone there is struggling and their future is completely unknown..

The process of applying for asylum status and being approved took three years, but he said he would have waited his lifetime for this news. It made me think how lucky we really are but how often we take so much for granted.

End of story, appreciate what we have, "living in the greatest country in the world".

And go vote, sometimes we complain, complain and complain even more but this one example of outsiders believing in our country opened my eyes.

Now on a personal note, I am looking forward to un-muting about 20 hockey people I follow on Twitter. For some reason they felt it was their responsibility to push their political message across, numerous times, over and over again. Even a handful of Canadian journalists were tweeting more politics than hockey but hopefully things will get back to normal soon.

It was just too much and too long to take and even though I may have missed some actual hockey news, it was much better for my peace of mind and sanity.

I stayed out of this presidential race and will respect the decision from our voters. I hope you will too.

I also wanted to thank the KK members for keeping their political views away from a hockey website. Even though we lost one KK member due to me linking to an actual hockey story on a site many consider far right, which at the time I had never heard of, you did well and I appreciate it.
