Gillies Gets Ten Games

via Katie Strang tweet,

Trevor Gillies suspended for 10 games by NHL

In case you missed the hit from Gillies on Cal Clutterbuck, you can watch it here.

added 3:15pm,

TORONTO (March 4, 2011)—New York Islanders forward Trevor Gillies has been suspended for 10 games and will forfeit $60,975.60 in salary for delivering a blow to the head of Cal Clutterbuck of the Minnesota Wild in NHL game #954, March 2, the National Hockey League announced today.

The incident occurred at 2:23 of the second period and Gillies was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for checking from behind.

“By targeting his opponent’s head, three shifts into his first game back from a suspension for a very similar action, Mr. Gillies has forfeited his privilege of playing in the League for 10 games,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “While it is fortunate there was no injury on the play, there can be no justification for a player delivering a dangerous check to an opponent in this manner”.

Gillies, who was suspended for nine games on Feb. 11, is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and forfeits his salary based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (186). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Well, now he’ll be sitting out for the amount of time he should have been sentenced for originally.

If we can now get the same punishment for career enders as well the NHL will be making some progress, but we know this is the NHL making an example out of a player that has no use and will turn a blind eye the next time it is a player or marginal value.

Terrible.  Should’ve been suspended for the rest of the year.

Though, this would have never happened if the NHL would’ve gotten it right the first time…

While it is fortunate there was no injury on the play, there can be no justification for a player delivering a dangerous check to an opponent in this manner”.

The Blackhawks played the Flames earlier this week:
Staios hit a Hawk in the back of the head, face first into the glass, three feet from the boards.
Hagman was hit directly in the head with a shoulder, a shoulder that was put where the Hawk wanted it to be. Hagman was woozy but returned in the game.
Seabrook threw Giordano from behind head first into the baords from near the goal line, but Giordano returned later.

The justification for no suspensions, I must assume, was that there were no injuries.

Each hit was a textbook penalty/grievous headshot (and Giordano’s from behind), and each player knew what they were doing, there was no grey area. When you put your forearms into the back of a player’s head, move your shoulder from a shoulder-area check to the top of the head area, and shove a bent-over player from behind into the boards after the puck went by, there’s not much discussion needed for intent.

Intent is bullshit.

Half as severe as it should have been.

Sadly, that’s progress.

I’m waiting for Colin Campbell’s ruling on the Lucic cross check to Moore’s head as well or does he recuse himself from a situation that involves his son’s team? Time for the NHL to start dropping the hammer on all of the illegal plays, not just selectively. Sorry I forgot Lucic got the game winner so his suspension was rescinded.

As opposed to the justification for the hit that Clutterbuck delivered moments before?

Hey way to go NHL , you sure laid down the law on a nobody who should really be working at wallmart rather than skating in the NHL.

Hope the same applies the next time it’s not a journeyman minor leaguer, but I won’t hold my breath.

Yeah, that one was ridiculous, again for Lucic. He’s really turned into one of the punks of the NHL.

Is that bolded part different than other suspensions?

Gillies’ 9 game suspension he lost $24,193 in salary

Todays:
“...suspended for 10 games and will forfeit $60,975.60 in salary…”

How does that work?

There certainly seems to be no lack of passion on this topic.  It might be useful to consider how much this “family man” has earned in the NHL this season, after taking away the earnings forfeited to date and how that compares to say, an AHL salary.  It might be better for his family (not to mention the NHL) had Mr. Gillies stayed in the minors.  Or better yet, in the LNH in Quebec where Mr. Brashear currently plys his dubious trade.

Yeah, Bertuzzis a real monster…. Good thing Sid has never punched a guy in the back of the head multiple times like a coward.

It’s your captain sucker punching Vlabik in the back of the head multiple times… Luckily for them there was no freak accident, but Sid did punch his taint… that kids got class!

How does that work?

First offenders lose one day’s pay (1/186 of their annual salary) for each game missed.

Repeat offenders lose one game’s pay (1/82 of their annual salary) for each game missed, so the financial hit more than doubles.

Gillies got 10 games?  If Taylor Hall had someone to stick up for him, he might not be gone for the season.  Hall’s suspension is longer.  lol

Now the guy on the Wild that came across the ice and hit the islander from behind and drove his head into the boards, how many games did that guy get, like 20?  Gillies hit came from a few feet away, the Wild guy came quite a ways to deliver that dirty hit.

What are you talking about, Roger?

Zack Stortini has as many fighting majors as Trevor Gillies, and I’m sure that if Hall hadn’t flipped his shit and instigated that fight, Stortini would have been happy to go toe-to-toe for the rookie.

On the other hand, let’s fix up what you said a bit.

If the Edmonton Oilers had somebody as meatheaded and goonish as Trevor Gillies Taylor Hall might have already been badly injured this season in retribution for the bullshit he pulls.

There… I think we got it right.

Actually, John Tavares has been a target for much of the season.  It seems like that hasn’t been a problem since the Penguin game.  Could there be a correlation between the two?

By the way, Clutterbacks hit on the Islanders 22 year old rookie only in his 2nd NHL game was worse then Gillies hit on him, and Lucic stick to the head of Moore on Tampa Bay last night was friggin scary.  He could have killed him.

Lucic got what 10, 15 games.  Probably not, he’s known to be a clean player!!!  LOL

So…

Gillies was on the ice when Clutterbuck hit the kid.

Obviously, the presence of Gillies isn’t a deterrent.  So what was your point about Hall again?

His point is that he’s absolutely, positively clueless.

Gillies is a f*cking saint!

That’s one helluva reach that Stortini has if he can hit someone in Alberta from all the way in Oklahoma…

Haha.  I didn’t know Stortini was in the minors right now.

I guess Roger was right after all.  If only the Oilers had a goon there to keep their young star from instigating a fight in which he got hurt…
