Getting The Story Right

from Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News,
It was a little after midnight. As usual, Jim Kelley was sitting at his computer, working on a column. Jim called to his wife, Susan, and said he’d be up to bed soon. Susan smiled. She had spent most of her life as a sportswriter’s wife, and she knew “soon” could mean hours or even days when Jim was determined to get the story right.
Kelley put the finishing touches on a column about Brian Burke, the GM of the Maple Leafs. In the last sentence, he wished Burke a happy second anniversary on the job. He filed the column with Sportsnet.ca, the Canadian Web site, at 1:30 Tuesday morning.
Later Tuesday, Kelley went to Buffalo General, where he died late that afternoon after a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Condolences to the Kelley family. I didn’t always agree with his opinions, but he was honest and consistent in his reporting. Having had an e-mal exchange with him during the lockout I found he was willing to debate the issue on its merits, not any pre-conceived notion and surprised he’d even take the time to answer.
