Getting Fed Up In Ottawa

from Wayne Scanlan of Sportsnet,

They have been a patient lot, fans of the Ottawa Senators.

But their patience is wearing thin.

Nearly four years since the most recent taste of playoff action, with promises of a deep rebuild and a bright future to emerge from the departures of fan favourites such as Mark Stone, Erik Karlsson, Kyle Turris and more, the fanbase is riled and cynical, and who can blame them?

At least they haven’t reached the state of apathy, which is the worst a franchise can endure.

They still care. They are angry. They want change. And they do see some promise in the young talent that has been stockpiled over the past three losing seasons.

No one expected the 2020-21 Senators to be world-beaters, but neither were they thought to be doormats, to be trampled upon by the six Canadian rivals in a North Division that is rag-dolling the Ottawa game after game, the most recent an 8-5 drubbing in Edmonton on Sunday.

Turns out spending lots of money on bad deals and trades in the off-season doesn’t make a team better.

Their top six on D leaves a lot to be desired.

Gudbranson is a bit of a mystery to me and
it’s been reported he’s been ok at about half of the
places he’s played (if you don’t mind a lumbering
defensive D who’s not a great puckhandler.

But they’re also playing Brayden Coburn who was
Tampa’s eighth defenseman and is in his mid-thirties.

And half the time they play Josh Brown, a 6-7 big, physical

Aside from Chabot, they don’t have much on the backend, especially in terms of
moving the puck quickly let alone driving offense.

Behind that, they made a serious investment in Matt Murray who’s not been good.

Their depth looks a little better at forward but have a bunch of young players and a jumble of new veterans all trying to fit together.

There are no other bad teams in their division, except when Vancouver plays Montreal.
