Gary Bettman Today

Nick Cotsonika has been tweeting up a storm from the 10th Annual PrimeTime Sport Management Conference in Toronto today.

Gary Bettman, Bill Daley, Brian Burke and others are speaking today.

This from Bettman via Nick's tweets,

Bettman said if you're going to have an international business strategy, you have to have events. NHL has to work with NHLPA. NHL hopes to have a regular presence internationally.

Bettman said ultimately the clubs believe the Olympics are too disruptive to the season and IOC doesn't allow the NHL to promote that it is there.

Bettman points out the Olympics have different effects on different teams, depending on how many players they send.

Bettman said if a Winter Olympics comes back to North America, he's not saying the NHL would go, but it would change the equation.

Two keys for NHL on Olympics: disruption to season, lack of control and promotion of someone else's tournament.

Bettman said the NHL, at least at 10,000 feet, is committed to doing World Cups on a regular basis.

There is more, so check out Nick's twitter feed.

added 11:14am, Emily Kaplan has been tweeting too...

This is where I have a widely different opinion of how the NHL needs to be marketed.
Bettman talks about ‘teams’ several times, but never ‘players’.
Everyone on the planet knows who Lebron James is. Or who Michael Jordan was.

The NHL does such an incredibly piss-poor job of promoting players, it’s laughable.
But the NHL does this on purpose. Why? Because after Crosby got cheap-shotted and was out for 18 months, (same with McDavid for 40 games) they realized they didn’t have the power, or more accurately, the desire to protect its players.

Sidney Crosby should be known all over the world. But he’s not.
And that is what the Olympics should be about - as far as marketing is concerned with the league.

Alas, the league has no desire to make the necessary changes to the best players in the world can shine every shift and every night.
Not when Jeremy Jacbos is running the show. He builds a team around muckers and defensive experts.
I’m sure the game would look differently if Boston had won the Crosby sweepstakes.

IMO, the season should be 70 games long.
Then restrict teams to dressing 15 skaters (5 skaters can be on standby for injuries).
Teams can still have the same amount of players on it’s official roster so there will be the same volume of NHL cheques being written - satisfying the NHLPA.

The players are more rested, and with less games, they can afford to take a 2-week hiatus for Olympic competition every 4 years.

Yeah, they really need to harness the amazing personalities of all those exciting NHL players.

You’re saying that Lebron James is marketable because of his personality?

Emily Kaplan of ESPN puts it in story form. Bettman talks Olympics, Word Cup, Work Stoppage and Expansion.

He does. The first thing he does when he wakes up is to call Cindy. LOL
