Gary Bettman On The Financial Situation In Calgary

via the CP at TSN,

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says the Calgary Flames' financial situation "continues to deteriorate" as the team continues to operate out of the aging Scotiabank Saddledome but maintained his position that he doesn't foresee the situation changing soon.

Bettman spoke to reporters in Calgary as part of his Western Canadian tour.

He said he wasn't there to make threats, yet he painted a bleak picture of the Flames' financial future if it continues to operate out of the NHL's oldest building.

Bettman said the Flames used to contribute to the NHL's revenue-sharing program, but have become increasingly reliant on it of late.

He said if the current situation continues it could affect the Flames' competitiveness and financial stability.

You can watch Bettman talking about Calgary at TSN.

So, buy yourself a new stadium, ownership group. Problem solved.

That’s funny.  CGY ranks 8th in the league in attendance this year, 10th last year, and 7th in the year before.  That’s at 97%, 97%, and 99% capacity.  Saddledome capacity is over 19,000.

It’s… it’s almost like any financial problems have nothing to do with the arena or something!

If a team is consistently in the Top 10 in attendance, under a salary cap, and still can’t compete financially, WHERE exactly IS that money going?

Maybe they should allow the Prime Minister to negotiate.

I’m not going to read up but I’m guessing this is ownership wanting the government to toss money their way so they can build a brand new arena that will re-invigorate the community etc and oh yeah, bumping up those luxury box revenues by an order of magnitude…and the gubment saying no. amirite

The delaying of new arena has at least one positive. It was built after LCA and Calgary can learn from mistakes and failures of LCA.

Those start and end with “Don’t have a crap team to go into the new arena with”?

Honest question:  since we all hear how much money the NHL is making year to year, why isn’t Bettman and company assisting to bankroll these new stadiums?

I’d much rather see the NHL support parts of these projects than tax payers.

Because they can. Period. For instance, the good taxpayers of St Louis are going to be paying for the NFL Rams’s stadium for years, and the team left anyway.  I hope people are waking up to this, because it’s getting old, across all sports.

Like Primis said, where is that money going?

The Flames are not going anywhere. Not ever. If the Sens haven’t left already, the Flames aren’t going to Quebec tomorrow. Seattle is getting a $650mil expansion franchise. Those few precious dollars should be just enough to prop up Florida and Arizona for another few years until Bettman can vomit the league onto some new frat boy.

I thought we weren’t bringing political BS into KK. I’ve been admonished for doing so, and by you, Paul.

I’m not pro or anti any person or political postion here. Let’s talk about hockey!
