Gary Bettman Met With The Media Today Before Game 1 Of The SCF

Bill Daly was there too.

Information from a few hockey guys on Twitter (highlights)...

Bob McKenzie...

Bettman says he is "fairly certain" he'll have more definitive word on expansion at the June 22 B of G meeting in Las Vegas. Four options.

Options: 1. No expansion; 2. Expansion but deferred to later date; 3. Expansion by 1 team; 4. expansion by 2 teams.

Chris Johnston...

Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle are no longer aggressively trying to sell the #pens, per Gary Bettman.

Bill Daly says "I wouldn't rule it out" when asked about whether there'll be ads on sweaters at the World Cup.

Pierre LeBrun...

Bettman says Russia was told Voynov isn't eligible to play in World Cup. But where it goes from there, we shall see

Difference between no-trade and no-movement clauses, clearly, in expansion draft. Daly says players with just NTC can be exposed

And while Daly wouldn't say, presuming therefore that players with full no-moves can't be exposed. Looks like they'll be immune to exp draft

Michael Russo...

Colin Campbell motions to Bettman there will be a little rule change next season, but offside rule expected to remain same

some have opined that blue line should be like a break the plane goal line in football bc of the offside challenges (skate off ice)

Elliotte Friedman...

"Minor" potential rule change: right now, puck over glass penalty determined by where your feet are, not puck. Proposal is to reverse that

That's so a player who has puck in neutral zone (but skates in own zone) does not get a penalty

added 6:33pm, Chris Johnston...

Some teams might not be able to comply with NHL expansion draft rules. The penalty if that happens is "significant" -- picks and/or players.

Bettman on expansion.

Bettman on Olympics...

Won’t the GMs be in a turmoil if expansion is this year? July 1st only 9 days from the weasel’s announcement.

He has to know by now and even a lot earlier.  He must be squeezing for more $$ for the owners to hide under their mattresses.

Expansion draft won’t be until next summer

Options: 1. No expansion

This is not an option in Bettman’s NHL.  Cash rules all, integrity of the game be damned.

This is a guy who made the Bolts cancel an event to watch a playoff game in their arena so he could squeeze out a sliver of a ratings point (and is obviously clueless as to how the ratings work). Then he schedules game 1 of the Final on the same night as NBA’s WCF, where hockey is going to get crushed in the ratings everywhere, but especially in the market of one of the teams in the Cup final.

What a moron.

Yeah, I’m sure Bettman’s TV people know a lot less than Steve does.  rolleyes

Garth, are you contesting the fact that the GSW/OKC game 7 is going to crush any hockey game? In which case, get your head out of the sand.

But if insulting me instead of refuting my factual statements makes you feel big (as is your pattern), you go right ahead.

Steve, don’t take offense at garth.

He is the resident contrarian.

You know, the sky is blue…no it’s not

The earth is round….no it’s flat

Anyone who dares express an opinion of gary that is negative,  does so at the risk if awakening garth and having him tell you why you are wrong.

I’d be interested to know why Garth thinks I’m wrong. He was very quick to point out that I’m wrong (I’m not), but seems thin on facts. Again, as is his pattern…

I see the pedants are out so why not indulge.

All things being equal, Sunday would have been the optimal day to start the series in terms of viewer numbers. Now, it would have only left 3 days after the conf finals, which isn’t ideal, though i think that’s what they went with two years ago after the Kings finished off the Ducks. That said, they were up against the calendar two years ago (Winter Olympics) and things went deep into June…normally they would have waited an extra day. But would the game have been on NBC Sunday night, or just NBCSN? Probably NBCSN, and that would automatically decrease potential viewership. Sunday morning, by contrast, would have been a little too soon, plus Indy was going on.

OTOH if game 1 was tomorrow, it’d almost certainly be stuck on NBCSN. No competition from basketball, but less potential viewers nationwide.

6 of one…

Garth, are you contesting the fact that the GSW/OKC game 7 is going to crush any hockey game?

Nope.  I’m contesting your “fact"s about regional TV ratings with regards to the viewing party that was canceled.

But you think you have facts, so far be it for me to disagree.

Yup, that’s me.  I love Gary and everyone knows it.
