Garth Snow Does Not Agree With Gillies Suspension

from Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post,

Islanders’ GM Garth Snow does not agree with the 10-game suspension that NHL handed down to Trevor Gillies on Friday. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t even necessarily think the hit Gillies put on the Wild’s Cal Clutterbuck during Wednesday’s 4-1 win was a penalty.

“From the play, the way I saw it develop, there was a hit form behind on [Islanders’ rookie Justin] DiBenedetto by the Minnesota player,” Snow said on Saturday before the Islanders’ game against the Blues at the Coliseum. “Then Trevor comes over and tries to finish his check. The first point of contact was shoulder-to-shoulder, it was not a hit from behind by any means.”

Pretty delusional assessment there….But I guess he also assessed that DiPietro should have a 15 year deal so there seems to be a pattern.

Not like it matters, but Snow didn’t do the DiPietro contract.

“Me and Trevor are different, you know?” Haley said. “He’s <ital>that<ital> guy and I don’t want to be that guy. He’s one of those guys, and that’s fine, but I’m going to keep doing what I do and hit and try and get under their skin and get in on the forecheck and [if] fights happen, then they happen.”

Can someone help me understand what Haley is saying here?  Is he saying that he does not want to be considered a dirty player like Trevor Gilies is?  Are Gillies’ teammates against his actions, or am i miss-reading this?

Garth Snow’s a beauty. A real beaut. “No comment” would have sufficed here.

He was the GM at the time, though I suppose it could have been Wang’s doing.

One of his teammates in the ECHL (now a journalist) had this to say about Gillies.

“you dont think he’s looking for any opportunity to validate his thug role/paycheck? Not in it for teammate”

If Haley, who is a noted minor league hothead (more Carcillo than Darcy Verot), is trying to create a distinction between his play and the kind of things that Gillies has been doing his entire career, they probably all think that. Incidentally, if you don’t want to click the link, the video is of Gillies boarding an unsuspecting player 50 feet away from the puck to try and start a fight with him (incidentally, trudging through the HF archive, Gillies seems to start half his fights by suckering someone, including one against Derrick Boogarde where he gets knocked retarded in repayment for jumping Boogeyman). When the boarded man doesn’t get up, he instigates a fight with the first player he sees (Godard).

Check out the volume of double-game misconducts, gross misconducts, match penalties and game misconducts on Trevor Gillies’ record some time. He’s the only ‘player’ of his kind currently in the league and the Islanders are the only organization that’s a big enough laughingstock to employ one. The other ‘pros’ like him are all in Russia now.

“I think his left glove accidentally followed through and made contact to the head,” Snow said.

Garth Snow is an idiot.

Garth Snow must be glad the Islanders had a slightly worse GM before in Mike Milbury.  That way he doesn’t look as bad.  He keeps trying to catch up though.  Luckily Milbury keeps lowering his own reputation by staying in hckey.

Glad I’m not an Islanders fan. The whole organization is working really hard to embarrass just about anyone connected to it in any way.
