Gainey Felt It Was Time To Pass The Torch

Gainey said he had decided to resign as general manager after a “long and difficult period of reflection.” With his contract due to expire in June, Gainey approached Pierre Boivin during the Christmas holiday period, telling the Canadiens’ president he was not interested in staying on “for four, five or rix years.”

“Given the choice between staying too long and leaving early, I prefer to leave a little bit too early,” Gainey said. “I did my best. Now iyt’s time to pass the torch.”
