Future USA Olympic Goalies

from CSN Washington,

As USA Hockey looks towards the 2014 Sochi Games, goaltending may be its deepest position.

THE LOCK:

JONATHAN QUICK (Los Angeles Kings): The Milford, CONN native led the NHL last season with 10 shutouts, finished second with a 1.95 goals-against-average and was the runner-up for the Vezina Trophy. This was all before he had even backstopped the Los Angeles Kings to an improbable Stanley Cup win….

IN THE MIX:

JIMMY HOWARD (Detroit Red Wings): Only three goalies have won more games the past two years than the 28-year-old, Syracuse, NY native. It should also be noted though, that only three teams have scored more goals than Detroit has over those same two years.

Unlike Quick who had to be exceptional just to get the 29th ranked offense into the playoffs last season, Howard just had to be good enough with the high-scoring Red Wings. In a short tournament where so much of a team’s success can lie with a hot goalie, Howard may not be that dominant goalie who can steal games.

Makes perfect sense. Quick had to be exceptional because the kings can’t score. Do they play great defensive hockey?

And howard had the easy route because the red wings can score goals. Do they play great defensive hockey?

Leaves me scratching my head. Can someone make sense out of that sentence?

I don’t really see how Schneider is “in the mix” given the few games he played, all while trying to replace the $1billion dollar goalie named Roberto.

Quick will not be able to keep up his 11/12 performance - he’ll be good, but not that good.

If Howard played for the NYR he’d be the “greatest goalie ever”.

Instead he plays for DET, so excuses have to be invented rather than just admitting he’s good.

Great example would be when Ozzie retired, and 2 minutes later there were debates all over the web and tv regarding whether or not he is a HOFer.  Skeptics said, “he played behind a great Detroit team.”

Haters gunna hate…
