Franson Not Thrilled With Apparent Benching For Game 1

from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,
Cody Franson thought he came here to make a difference on defence, not to sit on the bench.
But after all the talk of the Maple Leafs pulling off a coup in the trade with Nashville for the 6-foot-5 Franson — and the player’s own excitement at coming back to the hockey town where his family wanted him — he is picking out civilian clothes for Thursday’s NHL opener. He was once more the seventh man at Tuesday’s MasterCard Centre practice, behind pre-camp long shots such as Mike Komisarek and Jake Gardiner.
“It didn’t look too good out there for me today,” a sullen Franson said. “I had a lot of confidence coming in here, but apparently I didn’t show up well enough in camp or something. It’s frustrating. I mean, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but right now, I’m not too thrilled about it.”

more bad form in TOR. Franson is a sniper. How did he not go to another team for a steeper price? Hard not to hate Poile a little.

Ron Wilson just doesn’t feel comfortable unless he’s mysteriously benching a defenseman who should be in his lineup.

Two things wrong here. ...
one
29 yrs old, 8 yrs NHL experience, 470 games
vs
25 yrs old, 2 yrs NHL experience, 140 games
two
Going public with personal feelings on a one game decision, would
severely handicap your career in most markets.

I watched Toronto play Detroit the other night. The only defenceman who played worse than Franson was Dion Phaneuf (who was absolutely, unbelievably out of control. Since they will not/cannot bench their captain, Franson gets the blame.
John Michael Liles played the kind of game I expected he would. He can deal with the distractions that come with playing for a team with an idiot for a General Manager and a coach who has demonstrated over the years can turn a team into a rabble of discontented underachievers.
I see a very long, lousy season ahead for Leafs fans and players alike. Franson is just the first to feel the bite.
